UrbanSTREETs
An Innovative After-school sport/art form
African American Figure Skating Historian Mrs. Rory Flack-Mitchell has devised a unique way of introducing figure skating to our inner-city youth. With an after school program that begins in our schools. Mrs. Rory was introduced to Ice skating at the age of 4 ½ after being invited to a classmates birthday party at the mall in the early 70s. 10 years into Rory skating career the “Rollerblade” came out on the market. Before she knew it every skater she knew had a pair of roller-blades”. After being on the ice all morning she would roller-blade around town for fun. Now in days we would call this “CROSS TRAINING”.
As an introduction to ice we begin with the figure part of skating IE… The fundamentals… outside at the school or inside in the cafeteria as an after-school program on roller-blades. UrbanSTREETs offers all structured knowledge of figure skating at your facility. We work just as we would on the ice as a Learn to Skate program. Beginning with the Basic 1 and going through Basic 8.
Logistics for School or Church
Each school will have a different afternoon to attend UrbanSTREETs making this a 5 day After-school Program for the Houston School. Prices per student should reflect rental necessities. Currently the ice arena has ice skates for up to 40 students at a time with the skates being available with ice rental.
Each school provides a budget for ice rental transportation and driver to and from the ice rink. Total for each school for one calendar school year for ice rental will be approximately $3,600.00. Granted when each school has an After-school enrollment of at least 15 students per class it will cover all ice cost as well as providing payment for instructors. Bus fees need to be provided to factor in complete total budget needed. Our company will provide one instructor for each 8 youths attending.
In the END
Mrs. Rory Flack-Mitchell and Roi Mitchell Sr. are infusing the sports of Rollerblading and Ice Skating to create a sport for our inner city youth. With this fusion of Rollerblading and Ice Skating UrbanSTREETs has the potential to produce directly from the inner cities more diverse Beautiful Figure Skaters, build Roller Hockey and Ice Hockey teams, Develop in-house competitions as well as city wide competitions. And with the Fusion of ColorofIce KICKIN' IN, UrbanSTREETs and the National School Board Association, NSBA, there is the potential to create a new sport/ art form at a low expense to keep young minds and bodies engaged in productive physical activities.
